Once a celebrity exclusive treatment botox injections are an incredibly popular procedure used by hundreds of thousands of men and women worldwide to enhance their looks. After a few days you will notice that any lines are softer and you will look more refreshed.
A protein called Botulinum Toxin (of which Botox is a trade name (see below)) is a simple, non-surgical solution for facial wrinkles and lines.
Botox treats dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated muscular contractions such as frowning and squinting, relaxing the muscles and noticeably refreshing the facial appearance in just a few days.
Botox is approved in 70 countries and has been safely used for the treatment of a broad range of medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, post stroke related spasticity and hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating). In Cosmetic use the amount of toxin used is small and extremely safe.
Botox prevents wrinkles from appearing by relaxing the underlying muscles so they don’t contract. Using a tiny micro-needle, a very small amount of Botox is injected, very precisely, into several locations in the specified area. The treatment can be repeated every 3 months although sometimes the effects can last longer in those people who have regular treatment. This is because with regular Botox treatments you can break the unconscious habit of forming excessive expressions such as frowning.
Botox treatments are also used as a preventative treatment to prevent the formation of future wrinkles.
Forehead wrinkles appear in horizontal lines in the area between the eyebrows and the hairline. These wrinkles are formed during facial expression to convey emotions such as surprise or empathy.
Crow’s Feet wrinkles (Periorbiltal wrinkles) are in the outer corner of the eyes and appear more prominent when laughing or smiling. Crow’s Feet Wrinkles can result from excessive sun exposure combined with the skin becoming less elastic with age.
Reducing the appearance of frown lines is one of the most common reasons people choose to have Botox. Frown wrinkles (Glabella wrinkles) are most commonly seen in patients with excessive sun exposure and those who have over activity of these muscles often associated with frowning. Frown wrinkles are vertical lines and can signal emotions such as anger, anxiety or fear. People with these types of wrinkles may complain that their family, friends or work colleagues ask why they frown a lot. Frown wrinkles are vertical lines and can be successfully treated with Botulinum Toxin.
Our body produces sweat to keep itself cool, which is why we begin to sweat when something causes our temperature to rise. However, the temperature of the air around us or the weather isn’t the only thing that causes us to sweat. Exercise, physical stress, emotional stress and nervousness can also make us sweat. Many people sweat excessively (as much as four times the normal amount) just going about their daily lives as their bodies try to sustain a normal temperature. Excessive sweating is a condition known as hyperhidrosis, and it most noticeably affects the palms of the hands, the feet and the armpits. Not only is this an embarrassing thing to have, it can cause skin infections which can cause discomfort. Specialist antiperspirants may help but what really helps is botulinum toxin type A. Commonly known as Botox.
Our skin is made up of collagen and elastin and it is also full of sweat glands, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, blood vessels and nerve endings. When Botox is injected into the skin, the treatment affects the signal between the nerve endings and the sweat glands in the dermis. The botulism toxin binds itself to the nerve endings near the injection site, blocking the release of, a chemical our nerve cells make to communicate with each other, which disrupts the message sent from the nerve endings to stimulate the production of sweat. .
The procedure, involves precise injections of tiny amounts of a liquid purified protein. The needle used is fine and the pain minimal; most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite.
The effects of Botox usually last three to four months and after several treatments, results may last even longer.
It blocks impulses from the nerve to muscles, so they do not contract. the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract as usual, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. Treating wrinkles with Botox Cosmetic is a simple and safe procedure that only takes about 10 minutes. Using a tiny micro-needle to complete the procedure with minimal to nonexistent discomfort.
By combining Botox with peels, daily alphahydroxyacid, microdermabrasion and nonsurgical face lifts it is possible to look years younger without surgery.
Some patients may experience a slight, temporary bruising at the injection site. This can be easily covered with makeup.
In some cases, the Botox can migrate and cause a temporary weakness of nearby muscles. In rare cases, there can be a drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression.
Your initial assessment is performed by a Qualified Doctor or Nurse to ensure that Botox is right for you.
Please note that Botox is not advisable for individuals who are pregnant, nursing or have a neurological disease.
The results typically last approximately four months, although after a series of treatments they may last longer. Results vary for each patient.
Gradually, over three to five months, Botox effects will fade and the muscle action will return. A simple maintenance treatment is all that is necessary to refresh results. All prices include an initial free consultation and a free two week post treatment review.
The word Hoover is frequently used to describe any make of vacuum cleaner when it is in fact the name of one particular brand.
Similarly the word Botox is often used to describe any Botulinum toxin anti-wrinkle injection when it is actually the brand name of just one make. Botox was the first Botulinum to be widely used for cosmetic treatment and hence its name passed into common usage.
Botox treatment is simple quick and safe, however if you have not had treatment before, understandably you can feel a little nervous the first time.
The following is a guide to what to expect when booking an appointment for Botox treatment at The Holderness laser Clinic.
When you arrive at Holderness laser Clinic you will be greeted by a member of staff who will ask you to complete a medical history sheet.
This is to ensure that the doctor is made aware of any medical conditions which could rule out Botox treatment. Most people who have treatment are fit and well and are able to have the treatment. If you are pregnant or breast feeding the treatment is not recommended.
A history of Stroke or chronic diseases affecting the muscles such as Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton Lambert syndrome and Bell’s palsy would rule out the treatment, as well as a history of allergy to Botox.
At your initial free consultation, the doctor will discuss your expectations for the treatment and try to understand what results you are hoping to achieve. The doctor will make a medical assessment and explain how the treatment would help you and discuss the potential side effects.
If you are happy to proceed with the treatment, Botox treatment can usually be given during the initial free consultation. You will be asked to sign a consent form to indicate that you have understood the outcome of the treatment. Photographs are usually taken before the treatment as a medical record and after the treatment to allow the doctor to judge how successful the treatment has been. Photographs are kept safely and securely by Holderness Laser Clinic.
Before the treatment is given the skin will be cleaned with antiseptic. The treatment itself is very quick and takes about ten minutes.
It is relatively painless as the needles used for Botox are very small, and most people do not require any pain relief during the procedure. You will be able to resume your normal activities such as work as soon as treatment is finished. You should however remember to avoid alcohol, facial massages and extreme changes in temperature such as steam rooms and sauna’s for 24 hours after the procedure. The whole consultation time is around 30 minutes.
The effects of Botox will start to be visible about 4 to 7 days after the injections and the effects will last for about three months.
Before you leave you should book a free follow up appointment with the doctor or nurse two weeks after the treatment. This is so that the doctor or nurse can check that you are happy with the results and that the treatment has worked as you expected. If necessary, free Botox top up treatment can also be given at this follow up appointment.
